Seismic performance of an innovative structural system having seesaw motion and columns equipped with friction dampers at base level

Abstract: SUMMARYMost seismic design codes accept heavy damages to buildings in case of large earthquakes, provided that they are prevented against collapse. However, this leads to unacceptable consequences, such as very large volume of the required reconstruction works, in large populated cities. One way to get rid of these adverse consequences is using the idea of combining rocking/seesaw motion of the building's structure and energy dissipation at base level to create buildings easily repairable even after a large ea… Show more

“…Actually, the majority of gravity loads is carried by the GOSG, and its girders can be of plate girder type, Vierendeel truss type, or just truss type. In case of seesaw building, the strong floor is resting on a CMS, as the main support for tolerating the gravity loads as well as the horizontal component of earthquake forces, of which one type is shown in Figure 4, suggested by Hosseini et al [ 49 ] in a previous study on seesaw buildings. Some other types of CMS for seesaw buildings can be found in that study or other previous works of Hosseini and Kherad [ 19 ] or Hosseini and Ghorbani Amirabad, [ 20 ] as shown in Figure 1.…”

“…Zhang et al used a liftable pile foundation with friction dampers to effectively consume the seismic energy. Hosseini adopted friction telescopic columns and equipped the friction dampers at the ground floor of the buildings, as the main energy dissipating part of the seismic resistant system. The above technologies have better seismic reduction effect, whereas the structural forms were more complex.…”

“…Tremblay and colleagues studied seismic retrofit of existing low-rise steel buildings in eastern Canada using rocking braced frame system [12]. Also Hosseini and colleagues introduced a kind of seesaw building with friction dampers in columns at the lowest story [13], and Khalkhali and colleagues studied partitioned rocking buildings [14], and also Hosseini and Nejati worked design of repairable regular steel buildings with square plan based on seesaw motion of building structure and using double ADAS (DADAS) dampers [15].…”
