Seismic Mitigation of Building Frames using Magnetorheological Damper (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe present study focusses on the damping force control of shear mode magnetorheological (MR) damper for seismic mitigations. Therefore, the semi-active MR damper which can control the vibration is analyzed both experimentally and numerically. Carbonyl iron is used as the magnetic particle and Castrol Magnetec oil as carrier fluid throughout the study. MR damper is designed and fabricated, and its damping force was evaluated experimentally at 2.5 A-10 V. Shear mode MR Damper is tested in univers… Show more

“…Response time of MR fluids *Corresponding Author Institutional Email: surya_jrf@nitk.edu.in (S. Nagiredla) has great importance in most applications. Because of the quick, controllable rheological properties and reversible quality of the MR fluids, they found many potential applications in the field of vibration control devices, dampers, brakes and clutch applications [11][12][13][14][15]. Dynamic characterization studies are conducted on the MR/ER fluids to meet the appropriate application design specifications [16][17][18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…These performance parameters included inductive time constant, valve ratio, dynamic range, and pressure drop. To reduce the risk of earthquakes, Daniel et al [11] concentrated on the issue of adjusting the damping force of a shear mode magnetorheological damper. Consequently, the MR damper operating in shear mode capable of controlling vibration is studied using experimental and computational methods.…”

“…In 2019, Daniel et al [5] studied seismic mitigation of Magnetorheological dampers. In 2019, Del Gobbo and Marcantonio [6] also evaluated the seismic performance of three types of four-, eight-and sixteen-story buildings by installing viscous dampers.…”
