Segmented linear radiofrequency quadrupole/laser ion source project at TRIUMF

Abstract: Reactions such as 25 Al(p,γ ) 26 Si are the key to understand the production of 26g Al and 26m Al in our galaxy. Experimental results could provide important constraints on nova nucleosynthesis and modelling where 26 Al is believed to be produced. To achieve such measurements, high-intensity and high-purity radioactive beams are required. However, production targets at ISOL-type facilities such as ISAC at TRIUMF produce high-intensity alkali beams by surface ionization on hot transfer tubes hampering the measu… Show more

“…4. Laser excitation scheme development at TRIUMF is now performed in the LIS test stand [18] and uses the same ion source and extraction optics as for TRILIS radioactive ion beam production. Results which are obtained from the test stand can thus directly be applied at the production ion source.…”

“…The need for sufficient development time either for spectroscopic studies or technical improvements has been recognized at the existing on-line facilities. Consequentially, two on-line LIS facilities started initiatives for the construction of dedicated off-line laboratories like the LARIS laboratory at ISOLDE [1] and the LIS test stand at ISAC [33]. The field of recent or future developments that can be initiated in these laboratories as well as within other dedicated institutions is very broad and rapidly growing.…”

“…A first on-line application at ISOLDE is foreseen in 2008. Similar systems for surface ion suppression and laser ionization inside a subsequent radio-frequency structure have meanwhile been set up at the University Jyväskylä [28] and at ISAC [33].…”
