Fighting Pressures: Successful Psychosocial Adjustment of Middle Eastern Students at US Universities

Middle Eastern students seeking academic degrees in the US universities often experienced array of challenges in multiple levels as they adjust to the new environments. The current study investigated some of the psychosocial factors affecting their adjustments, namely: age, gender, and marital status. Quantitative method was used to collect data in which a survey was distributed and later analyzed for 92 Middle Eastern participants. The results of the study reveal the followings: (1) age was a significant factor impacting the level of adjustment at α = 0.0001, (2) gender on the other hand was not statistically significant as there was no difference between males versus females on the level of adjustment, (3) results also revealed that marital status had a statistically significant impact in which married participants displayed a higher level of adjustment than singles, and (4) with the current changes in the social lives and gender roles in the Middle East, further investigations are opened for exploration.

Due to a wide range of challenges, including stress and anxiety, international students are at a heightened risk for developing mental health issues or experiencing poor mental and psychological well-being (Yan & Pei 2018). Compared to other types of tourists, international students are here for educational reasons; as a result, they face unique challenges in adjusting to life in a new country, culture, and language. For college students, leaving home to live on campus is a watershed moment. Nonetheless, it can be difficult for students, especially those studying abroad, to make the change from home to campus life. Academic, cultural, social, and psychological adaptations of overseas students are examined in this article. Mental anguish from things like homesickness, melancholy, and worry all fall under the umbrella of adjustment problems. The purpose of this essay is to help the reader have a better appreciation for the challenges that overseas students encounter as they acclimatize to life at international educational institutes. In particular, the essay delves into the many phases of cultural adjustment and the elements that contribute to them. The solutions to the challenges faced by foreign students may be found in this article, which may be useful to students, educational institutions, and policymakers. I. INTRODUCTIONInternational students are individuals who travel to different countries for educational purposes (The International Student′S Survival Guide, n.d.).. They comprise an essential part of higher education systems globally, with around five million studying abroad in 2020 (Bista, 2018). Nonetheless, overseas students encounter significant obstacles to psychological transition that impair their academic progress and mental health. Acculturation is the process of adjusting to new surroundings, cultures, and languages; psychological adjustment is the term used to describe the changes that take place in a person's psychological state as a result of this process (Gündüz & Alakbarov, 2019). Some of the most common challenges that overseas students face are feelings of sadness and anxiety, feelings of isolation, experiencing culture shock, trouble financially, issues in their academics, and discrimination against them (Zhang-Wu 2018).

Purpose Responsive educational approaches focus on a set of well-designed practices intended to create engaging, social cohesion, better knowledge outcomes and excellent students’ experience. Therefore, this paper aims to engage in the discourse of the intersection of psych-sociology of learning and student’s engagement, connected to the sense of belonging and theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Design/methodology/approach By applying an ethnographic approach and interviews of 45 international students from three UK business schools, it proposes that a sense of “belongingness” is a prerequisite for learning, personal and professional development. Owing to the exploratory nature of the subject, the use of qualitative methodology turned out to be particularly useful. Indeed, the conduct of in-depth semi-structured interviews, participative observation enabled us to access perceptions of students and compare different points of view. Findings The findings indicate that international students measure their experience by “sense of belonging”, integration and engagement on many interrelated and influential factors. English proficiency and employability skills are the major concerns. The kinds of support they received from their faculties and the quality of feedback from tutors are important for international studies integration and sense of belonging. Originality/value The findings of the critical elements of the engagement and experience of international students have both policy and practical implications given the high demand for UK universities by foreign students. Although, this paper is based on findings from UK higher education institutions, the insights are of relevance to many countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany, France and the USA, who have a significant proportion of overseas students.
