In semi-arid lands, vegetation is distributed in shrub patches immersed in a less vegetated interpatch matrix. Grazing affects perennial grass seed bank through a decrease in seed rain and an increase in seed predation and soil compaction. Nevertheless, some species with anchorage mechanisms in their seeds might overcome this, such as Nassella tenuis (Phil.) Barkworth. This is an important species in grazing paddocks because it has an intermediate palatability and its relatively tolerant to grazing. These characteristics allow N. tenuis to increase its abundance in grazed sites. Our objective was to assess how grazing affects the key palatable species from seeds to seedlings: i.e., seed rain, soil seed bank, and seedling recruitment in different microsites along a windward-leeward transect across shrub canopy. We hypothesized that: (1) the negative effects of grazing on N. tenuis fructification are reflected in its seed rain, soil seed bank, and seedling recruitment, especially in interpatches; (2) Nassella tenuis seed rain reduction, soil compaction by cattle in grazed sites, and removal of seeds by wind decrease its soil seed bank, especially in microsites exposed to the predominant wind; and (3) the decrease in N. tenuis soil seed bank and cover increase in annual species in grazed sites have negative effects on its seedling recruitment, especially in microsites exposed to predominant wind. We placed seed traps, collected soil samples, and monitored seedling recruitment in different locations around shrub canopy to address our hypotheses. Also, we established a manipulative experiment in which we sow N. tenuis seeds and followed its recruitment in different microsites. We compared the seed rain, soil seed bank, natural seedling recruitment, and sown seeds recruitment of N. tenuis between grazed and ungrazed sites. We analyzed differences between microsites along a windward-leeward transect across shrubs patches. Seed rain and soil seed bank had the same density in patches and interpatches both in ungrazed and grazed sites. But seed rain was higher, and soil seed bank was lower in ungrazed sites than in grazed sites. Almost all under-canopy microsites showed greater soil seed bank abundance and natural seedling recruitment in ungrazed sites. Sown seeds recruitment was the same between grazed and ungrazed sites, but it showed protective effects of shrubs in leeward microsites under grazed sites. As a conclusion, seed rain and soil seed bank are complementary under grazed sites.

R��. Los suelos del noreste patagónico presentan una marcada heterogeneidad, dada principalmente por su textura. En esta región se observan fuertes procesos de degradación. El objetivo fue estimar la supervivencia de especies nativas en ensayos de rehabilitación ecológica en áreas degradadas, sobre suelos de diferente textura, y evaluar el reclutamiento alrededor de los ejemplares trasplantados sobrevivientes. Los estudios se realizaron en tres sitios con historia similar de uso, con suelos franco, franco-arenoso y arenoso. En cada sitio se instalaron tres parcelas de 100 m 2 , excluidas del pastoreo del ganado. Se trasplantaron individuos de especies leñosas (Condalia microphylla, Geoffroea decorticans, Prosopis flexuosa y Schinus johnstonii) y herbáceas (Nassella longiglumis, Nassella tenuis, Pappophorum caespitosum y Piptochaetium napostaense). El reclutamiento se estimó en parcelas de 50x50 cm, dejando al ejemplar trasplantado sobreviviente en el centro. Las estimaciones fueron realizadas cuatro años después del trasplante. El reclutamiento se categorizó en especies leñosas forrajeras y no forrajeras, y herbáceas anuales o perennes forrajeras y no forrajeras. La textura del suelo parece no influir en la supervivencia de las especies herbáceas trasplantadas, pero sí en una leñosa (S. johnstonii), que fue significativamente mayor en suelos franco-arenosos. La riqueza de especies reclutadas fue similar entre sitios, excepto para las herbáceas anuales no forrajeras, que fueron mayores en suelos francos y franco-arenosos. No se detectó reclutamiento de leñosas trasplantadas, pero sí de otras leñosas nativas, mientras que el reclutamiento de herbáceas perennes fue sólo de las trasplantadas. La densidad no evidenció correspondencia con la textura del suelo, excepto para las especies herbáceas anuales forrajeras y no forrajeras, cuyas densidades fueron mayores en sitios franco y franco-arenoso, respectivamente. La mayoría de las especies seleccionadas son aptas para proyectos de rehabilitación ecológica. La provisión de semillas de cada sitio tendría una importancia preponderante en la riqueza y la densidad del reclutamiento.

Seed rain and the soil seed bank represent the dispersal of seeds in space and time, respectively, and can be important sources of recruitment of new individuals during plant community regeneration. However, the temporal dynamics of seed rain and the mechanisms by which the seed rain and soil seed bank may play a role in plant community regeneration with increased grazing disturbance remain unclear. Seed rain, soil seed bank, aboveground vegetation, and rodent density were sampled along a grazing gradient in an alpine marsh on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. We described the temporal dynamics of seed dispersal using Bayesian generalized mixed models, and nonmetric multidimensional scaling and the structural equation model were used to examine the effects of grazing disturbance on the relative role of seed rain and soil seed bank on aboveground plant community regeneration. The temporal dynamics of seed rain changed from a unimodal to a bimodal pattern with increased grazing disturbance. Both species diversity and seed density of the seed rain and seed bank increased significantly with increased grazing disturbance. Increased grazing disturbance indirectly increased the similarity of composition between seed rain, seed bank, and aboveground plant community by directly increasing species diversity and abundance of aboveground plant community. However, increased grazing disturbance also indirectly decreased the similarity of seed rain, soil seed bank, and aboveground plant community by directly increasing rodent density. The similarity between seed rain and aboveground plant community was greater than that of the soil seed bank and aboveground plant community with increased grazing disturbance. Grazing disturbance spreads the risk of seed germination and seedling establishment by changing the temporal dynamics of seed dispersal. Plants (positive) and rodents (negative) mediated the role of seed rain and soil seed bank in plant community regeneration. The role of seed rain in plant community regeneration is higher than the seed bank in disturbed alpine marshes. Our findings increase our understanding of the regeneration process of the plant community, and they provide valuable information for the conservation and restoration of alpine marsh ecosystems.
