“…These analyses suggest that the Mesozoic continental rifting occurred predominantly toward the southeast with respect to North America. This is in agreement with recent analyses of crustal thickness and seismic velocity in the mantle lithosphere (Miao et al., 2022; Nguyen et al., 2022).…”

“…The onshore US Gulf Coast Moho is also comparable to that estimated from a joint‐inversion study of Miao et al. (2022) with an overall difference of 2.7 km. Figure 4 displays thickness of the crystalline crust taken as lying between the 3.2 and 4.2 km/s contours of our velocity model.…”

“…Seismic interferometry has been widely applied to retrieve the empirical Green's functions of surface waves (Berg et al., 2018; Miao et al., 2022; Qiu et al., 2020, 2021; Schimmel et al., 2018; Shen et al., 2013; Yao et al., 2006) and body waves (Clayton, 2020; Feng et al., 2017, 2021; Gorbatov et al., 2013; Kennett, 2015; Oren & Nowack, 2017; She et al., 2022) from ambient noise auto‐ and cross‐correlations. Many ambient noise surface wave tomography studies on Earth have focused on the calculations of the Rayleigh wave phase velocity to invert for the S‐wave velocity of sedimentary basins (Cai et al., 2022; Hannemann et al., 2014; Pan et al., 2016; Qiu et al., 2019; Shirzad & Shomali, 2014), the crust and upper mantle (Li et al., 2012; Lin et al., 2014; Nguyen et al., 2022; Yao et al., 2008; Zhang et al., 2018).…”

“…While gravity and magnetic maps provide valuable albeit lowresolution shoreline-crossing structure of the basement rocks, the crustal structure of the shallow-water continental shelf including onshore-offshore continuity of pervasive salt structures (information of critical importance to hydrocarbon exploration) is difficult to ascertain due to the lack of geophysical technology that probes seamlessly across the shoreline. Eddy et al 12 and Miao et al 13 indicated that continental structure along the Texas-Louisiana coastline has influenced the opening of the Gulf of Mexico; however, a comprehensive shoreline-crossing interpretation is not possible since the two adjacent surveys are of different types, and more importantly, are disconnected at the coastal white ribbon.…”
