ABSTRACT. An updated checklist of the polychaete species described for the Mexican Pacific and an historic review of their study are presented. The taxonomic list includes nomenclature references, data of the type locality and synonyms based on systematic revisions. In the study area, 313 species of polychaetes and 21 genera have been described, of which 278 species are currently valid. Several descriptions (28%) of the valid species failed to indicate the habitat of the type locality. The remaining 199 valid species were described for a large variety of habitats: algae (11 species), mangroves (2), hard bottoms (22), soft bottoms (continental shelf = 65 species; deep sea = 78 species), hydrothermal vents (17), and others (parasites, larval planktonic forms, epitokes) (4). The species descriptions for the Mexican Pacific can be divided into four main periods: the first, during the 1910s, includes mainly Chamberlin's studies of deep sea fauna. The second, in the 1940s, comprises studies carried out by Rioja (intertidal zone) and Hartman (including specimens from the Allan Hancock Foundation collection). The third period began around the 1970s when Fauchald's studies were published and 77 currently valid species were described for western Mexico. The fourth period began in the 1980s and continues to date, being characterized by descriptions of species done mainly by Mexican scientists. The differences in the number of species described during each period and for the different regions of the Mexican Pacific are directly related to the sampling effort carried out along these coasts.Keywords: Polychaeta, benthos, biodiversity, geographic distribution, Mexican Pacific. Se presenta una lista taxonómica de las especies de poliquetos descritos en el Pacífico mexicano y una revisión histórica de su estudio. El listado incluye referencias nomenclaturales, información sobre la localidad tipo y sinonimias basadas en revisiones sistemáticas. Un total de 313 especies y 21 géneros han sido descritos en el área de estudio, de ellas, 278 especies son actualmente válidas. El 28% de las descripciones de las especies válidas no incluyeron el hábitat de la localidad tipo. SUMMARY: Two kinds of chaetal hard structures have been analysed within the genus Mesochaetopterus (Chaetopteridae, Polychaeta): the specialised chaetae of the fourth segment of the anterior part of the body (i.e. the A4 segment) and the uncinal plates present on neuropodia of mid and posterior parts (i.e. B-and C-regions, respectively). The examination of a large number of specimens leads to identification of finer geographic differences based on the morphological variations of these chaetal hard structures than on criteria linked to the soft body structures. These differences may be considered as specieslevel markers with a high degree of certainty. As a consequence, the reintroduction of M. sagittarius (Claparède, 1870) is proposed for specimens from the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea, while M. minutus (Potts, 1914) is retained for some specimens from the Pacific Ocean. The specimens from the Persian (= Arabian) Gulf seem to be different from those of the Indian Ocean, likely a new species of the genus. Geographic differentiation is also observed over shorter distances and two morphologies of A4 chaetae are identified on specimens from the Solomon's archipelago, suggesting also the presence of new species. However, other taxonomically valid characters should be explored, in addition to the chaetal hard structures described herein, to formally describe these species. This research adds to the growing literature that suggests truly cosmopolitan species, specifically within the genus Meesochaetopterus and possibly within the Chaetopteridae as a whole, are increasingly difficult to find.Keywords: chaetal hard structures, chaetopterid, Annelida, systematics, geographical distribution. RESUMEN: NUEVOS RESULTADOS SISTEMATICOS BASADOS EN LAS QUETAS DE MESOCHAETOPTERUS (POLYCHAETA). -Dos clases distintas de estructuras duras se han analizado en el género Mesochaetopterus (Annelida, Polychaeta): las sedas especializadas del cuarto segmento de la región anterior del cuerpo (región A4) y las placas uncinígeras presentes en los neuropodios de las regiones media y posterior (regiones B y C, respectivamente). El estudio de dichas estructuras en un elevado número de ejemplares ha permitido identificar diferencias relacionadas con la distribución geográfica con una mayor precisión que en base a criterios relacionados con las partes blandas de cuerpo. Ciertamente, dichas diferencias pueden considerarse marcadores específicos. Como consecuencia, se propone la reintroducción de M. sagittarius (Claparède, 1870) para las poblaciones atlanto-mediterráneas, mientras que se retiene M. minutus (Potts, 1914) para determinadas poblaciones del Pacífico. Based on the 1958 Vema cruise and the 1965 Anton Bruun cruise 11 off the west coast of Central America and sout'h through the islands ezst of the tip of South America, 143 trawl samples were examined for abyssal polychaetous annelida. The cruise tracks designated 7 major areas: Central America (I), Ecuador-Peru (11), Central and Southern Chile (111), Chile and the Magellan Strait (IV), Tierra del Fuego (V), the Island Complex (Falkland, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands) (VI), the Dribke Strait and Antarctic Peninsula (VII). The collections yielded 7,015 individuals and 322 species from 52 families. The relatively small number of species was attributed mainly to sampling effort, collecting gear and processing techniques.Each major area was characterized in terms of the number of individuals, the number of species, mean number of individuals, mean number of species and mean H', S R , J' and DI. Species diversity was significantly higher in Central America (I) than in the other areas. The relationships between biotic and abiotic measures (dept'h and areas of upwelling) were examined. There were no significant associations for the entire data base with depth. Moreover, there was no association between abundance of polycliaetes and areas of upwelling which was hypothesized. I n fact, relative abundance was highest in the deepest portions of Central America (I) (Guatemala Basin) and Ecuador-Peru (11) (Milne-Edwards Deep) compared to shallower areas closer to areas of upwelling. Quantitative collecting gear and refined processing techniques will be required to more accurately address these relationship?. Dominant families were identified in terms of number of sFecirs and number of individuals. These families conformed well with world wide generalizations of dominant families. Dominant, species were identified based on the Biological Index Value. The top twenty or dominant species for each major brea were identified. A number of these dominant species occurred widely throughout the mnjor areas. The dominant species for the entire data set were determined. I n general these species were very eurybathic which was consistent with other worldwide depth distributions of abyssal polychaetes.
