Security and Privacy Issues in Intelligent Transportation Systems: Classification and Challenges

Abstract: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) aim at integrating sensing, control, analysis, and communication technologies into travel infrastructure and transportation to improve mobility, comfort, safety, and efficiency. Car manufacturers are continuously creating smarter vehicles, and advancements in roadways and infrastructure are changing the feel of travel. Traveling is becoming more efficient and reliable with a range of novel technologies, and research and development in ITS. Safer vehicles are introduced … Show more

“…The progression in intelligent technologies has opened a wide array of opportunities for the ever-vulnerable smart vehicle systems. The availability of 4G LTE and 5G communication spectrum has unlocked many possibilities for cyber-attacks leading to compromise of security in smart vehicular systems (SVS) [ 136 ]. These connected vehicles are the source of generation to the enormous amount of data and therefore are vulnerable to many security attacks.…”

“…However, the faults in the on-board sensors of a vehicle might occur due to environmental factors, cyber-attacks, and wear and tear. 21,22 The presence of sensor fault in a platoon system can lead to performance degradation and loss of infrastructure and human life. Fault detection and control related to a vehicle have been carried out by Douglas et al 23 However, the work is not applicable for control of a platoon system.…”
