Secular Trends in Growth of Preschool Children from Rural Maharashtra, India

Abstract: The study examined the secular trends in growth of preschool children from rural Maharashtra, India, during 1985-2001. Anthropometric data collected on preschool (<6 years old) children during 2001 (n=1,171) and 1985 (n=979) from the same villages were compared. Decadal change increased with age and was marginally higher in boys than girls. It was the lowest among infants (-0.1 to 0.1 kg and 0.4 to 0.7 cm in both sexes) and the highest among boys of 4+ years (1.3 kg and 2.9 cm) and girls of 5+ years (1.2 kg … Show more

“…They can be perceived as a natural biological experiment reflecting complex interaction of genes, physiology and the environment that all define the body shape and size from generation to generation (Cole, 2003). The secular trend is biological indicator that is used in auxology and for assessing the degree of socio-economic development of a country, which is important information for public health policies (Rao et al, 2012). Human biological characteristics are influenced by genetic factors and also by the natural and socio-economic environment. It is well known that height of individuals is a significant index of nutrition and health of a population (Akachi and Canning, 2007;Deaton, 2007).…”

“…Over the past two decades, with socioeconomic development, people have improved living standards and society, and parents have provided a more privileged life to their children, including increased health management investment, greater accessibility to education and improved food supply [1,2]. As previously reported, sustained economic growth has a substantial effect on children's long-term health [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Several researchers have shown that economic production plays a positive role in regional trends in children's physical growth [5,[7][8][9].…”

“…However, the studies concerning this problem in the context of the intergenerational transformations, usually focus on body height, weight, trunk measurements, and their relationships. This is true for the research carried out in the Indian population as well as for the studies conducted in other countries (Himes & Malina, 1975;Koziel, Gomula, & Nowak-Szczepa nska, 2016;Kryst et al, 2018;Kryst, Woronkowicz, Kowal, & Sobiecki, 2017;Rao, Kanade, Joshi, & Sarode, 2012;Woronkowicz et al, 2016). Quite rarely similar studies concern limb proportions and even then they usually focus solitary on the length of the lower limbs (Bigec, 2013;Dangour, Schilg, Hulse, & Cole, 2002;Dasgupta, Saha, & Nubé, 2008;Sohn, 2015;Woronkowicz et al, 2016).…”
