Secretory response to cholera toxin in the porcine jejunum under different types of general anaesthesia

Abstract: SUMMARYInvestigations of intestinal secretion are often performed under anaesthesia. This study evaluates the influence of anaesthetic agents on the intestinal secretion induced by cholera toxin (CT) in the pig. CT was instilled for 4 h in ligated jejunal loops under anaesthesia with halothane, saffan, a-chloralose, or propofol. Cardiovascular parameters, blood gas data, plasma cortisol levels, net fluid accumulation, intraluminal mediators (serotonin (5-HT), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)) and electrolyte concentrat… Show more

“…1a). These doses of ST and CT have previously been shown to induce a maximal fluid accumulation in the porcine small intestine (Grøndahl et al., 1998; Maltbæk et al., 1998). Treatment with indomethacin had no effect on the ST‐ (mean concentration 1.1 × 10 11 ± 9.6 × 10 11 cfu in n =32; N =8) and the CT‐induced (56 μg/loop in n =12; N =8) jejunal fluid accumulation, although a minor, non‐significant effect was observed in the CT‐induced fluid accumulation.…”

“…(1998). The fluid accumulation to CT in the porcine small intestine depends on the anaesthetic (Maltbæk et al., 1998). Apart from different effects on the nervous system and the synaptic mechanisms (Griffiths and Norman, 1993), anaesthetics additionally influence the endogenous production of PGE 2 (Denson et al., 1996).…”
