Second and third harmonic conversion of a kilowatt average power, 100-J-level diode pumped Yb:YAG laser in large aperture LBO

Abstract: We report on the successful demonstration of second and third harmonic conversion of a high pulse energy, high average power 1030 nm diode pumped Yb-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Yb:YAG) nanosecond pulsed laser in a large aperture lithium triborate (LBO) crystal. We demonstrated generation of 59.7 J at 10 Hz (597 W) at 515 nm (second harmonic) and of 65.0 J at 1 Hz (65 W) at 343 nm (third harmonic), with efficiencies of 66% and 68%, respectively. These results, to the best o… Show more

“…Once the required pump energy is reduced to less than ≈1/10, e.g., 50-100 J nanosecond pulses centered at 515/527 nm, the cryogenic gas-cooled diode pumped Yb:YAG lasers can meet the require-ment and importantly which now can operate at 1-10 Hz. [365][366][367] In this case, dramatically reducing pulse duration can realize the high-repetition short-pulse PW laser.…”

“…Since the main scientific use of DiPOLE 100-X is laser-driven shock and ramp compression, the laser provides pulse shaping capabilities with a resolution of 125 ps, allowing arbitrary waveforms ranging in duration from 2 to 15 ns. Frequency doubling of the 1030 nm laser to 515 nm with 60 J at 10 Hz for a 10 ns pulse has been demonstrated using a 60 mm large aperture lithium-triborate (LBO) crystal (Phillips et al, 2021); conversion efficiencies for a 2 ns pulse are expected to be similar. The laser is synchronized with the X-ray beam using the XFEL timing system which has an RMS jitter of approximately 10 ps.…”

“…The dynamic laser compression setup at the HED instrument was conceived for operations in IC2 with the maximum degree of flexibility between the three main components, the DIPOLE 100-X laser, the VISAR velocity interferometer system and the sample station for x-ray diffraction experiments. The DIPOLE 100-X laser [99] is an all diode pumped 100 J class ytterbium:YAG based laser. The VISAR system consists of 3 velocity interferometers at 2 different wavelength (532 and 1064 nm).…”
