SecGrid: A Secure and Efficient SGX-Enabled Smart Grid System With Rich Functionalities

Abstract: Smart grid adopts two-way communication and rich functionalities to gain a positive impact on the sustainability and efficiency of power usage, but on the other hand, also poses serious challenges to customers' privacy. Existing solutions in smart grid usually use cryptographic tools, such as homomorphic encryption, to protect individual privacy, which, however, can only support limited and simple functionalities. Moreover, the resource-constrained smart meters need to perform heavy asymmetric cryptography in … Show more

“…However, the continuous usage of conventional resources(coal and petroleum products) results in their depletion, although they assure constant power supply. In addition, the emission of greenhouse gases from conventional resources affects the  ISSN: 1693-6930 ecology [33]. Hence, RES and sustainable energy resources are becoming an alternative and necessary factor in generating power, but there is a need to assure the quality of power.…”

“…The growth of the energy sector could be curtailed in an instance when the transmission system remains stagnant. Some important building blocks of transmission system s are, PMU, phasor data collector (PDC), FACTS, advanced storage apart from the ever-increasing transmission in case of HVDC and HVAC, wide-area monitoring, and WAMPAC assures reliable transmission system [17][18][19]33]. Although the capabilities of the transmission system can sustain the current load, SG implementation on a larger power system scale would have to upgrade the capacity of the transmission system prompting a considerable influx of capital [44].…”

“…Garg et al in [27,28] introduce lightweight authentication schemes for resource-constrained smart meters and generally for Internet-of-things devices, respectively. Other authors, such as in [29], propose a privacy-preserving scheme for resource-constrained smart meters.…”

“…However, in some application scenarios, the average, maximum or minimum of data cannot meet the needs, a variety of fine-grained data is required. Recently, a privacy-preserving computing function library is designed based on Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) [12]. However, Intel SGX may suffer from attack such as side-channel attack [13].…”
