Sebaceous carcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: BackgroundSebaceous carcinoma is a rare malignancy primarily with aggressive growth affecting the cutaneous tissues of the periocular region. Sebaceous carcinoma of the parotid gland is exceedingly rare, with only 32 cases reported in the literature. Our case brings this total to 33.Case presentationWe present a case of a 57-year-old Moroccan woman with a firm, painless, slowly enlarging swelling at her left parotid area, with normal overlying skin and no palpable neck nodes. Parotidectomy with facial nerve pr… Show more

“…The salivary gland sebaceous adenocarcinoma 5‐year overall survival rate is approximately 60%, lower than the 75.2% considered for SC of the skin and orbit . Treatment of the sebaceous adenocarcinomas of the salivary glands, as well as of other sites, is basically surgical . In this study, most patients were treated only with surgery or surgery in association with other therapies, such as chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy.…”

“…Extra‐ocular SCs are uncommon, and most cases occur in the head and neck area . However, it is exceptionally rare in salivary glands, with only 50 cases reported to date . These tumours are recognised as sebaceous adenocarcinoma when occurring in salivary glands and tend to be aggressive, with recurrences and high metastatic potential .…”

“…The origin of extracutaneous SC in different location is not exactly the same. SC of parotid gland is originate from the pluripotential cells distributed in the blind-ending intercalated and striated ducts, which can differentiate into sebaceous that secondary to obstruction or in ammation, or congenital presence of sebaceous differentiation [14]. SC in oral cavity is thought to arise from salivary gland elements or ectopic sebaceous glands, that is fordyce's spots, which are usually found in buccal mucosa, soft palate, upper lip, or gingiva, etc [15].…”
