“…Previous studies in Argentinean newborns, children and young adults performed at different times found the average range of 25OHD in the South region to be significantly lower than in the Mid and North (Ladizesky et al, 1987;Oliveri et al, 1990Oliveri et al, , 1991Oliveri et al, , 1993aOliveri et al, , 1994Plantalech et al, 1997), due to the lack of skin photoproduction of vitamin D during winter in the latter region (Ladizesky et al, 1995).…”

“…All biochemical determinations were performed at the laboratory of the Hospital de Clínicas using methods described elsewhere (Ladizesky et al, 1987;Oliveri et al, 1990Oliveri et al, , 1991Oliveri et al, , 1993aZeni et al, 2001). The interassay and intra-assay CV of 25OHD (RIA-IDS) were 8.2% and 5.3%, respectively.…”

“…2 It is recognized that less severe vitamin D deficiency (otherwise called insufficiency) has a deleterious effect on skeletal health in adults and elderly [3][4][5][6] ; however, its impact on bone metabolism in children and adolescents is less clear. The consensus has been that most adolescents should be able to synthesize sufficient vitamin D by brief exposure to sunlight and that only children living in extreme northern or southern latitudes may require supplementation with D 7,8 ; examination of the recent evidence leads to different conclusions. Indeed, 80% of children and adolescents had insufficient vitamin D levels (25-hydroxyvitamin D levels Ͻ20 ng/mL) in the winter in 4 studies conducted in Spain, France, and Finland.…”

“…En Argentina, específi-camente en regiones australes, los niveles séricos de vitamina D disminuyen significativamente en período invernal 44 . Por su parte, en Chile no existen mediciones de grandes cohortes de chile nos para conocer su estado nutricional de vitamina D debido a que la incidencia detectada depende del punto de corte en los niveles séricos de 25-OHD 46 se han comprobado que, la frecuencia de déficit alcanza prácticamente 85% de la muestra, especialmente en los meses de invierno.…”
