Seasonal trend of climate variables in an area of the Caatinga phytogeographic domain

Abstract: Wide variability in the rainfall regime and drought is characteristic of semi-arid regions. A better understanding of this variability can aid decision-making in the short, medium and long term. The aim of this study was to identify long-term patterns and trends in rainfall and temperature through the use of temporal patterns, in addition to assessing the duration of wet and dry periods. Daily historical series of rainfall and temperature for the district of Iguatu, Ceará were used. For rainfall, the annual an… Show more

“…The total event rainfall varied from 0.42 to 116.70 mm (Table 3), evidencing the high variability of rainfall in the region (Figure 4). The highest frequency of occurrence (48%) was recorded for events with a total rainfall below 5.0 mm (Table 3 and Figure 4)-the high occurrence of small rainfall events and high temporal variability are characteristics of tropical semi-arid regions of low latitude [22,33,42]. For more information on the contribution of low rainfall events to the understanding of the hydrological processes, see the research [5,43] in a tropical semi-arid region of low latitude.…”

“…This xeric and thorny scrub forest, which consists mostly of cacti and small thorny trees that lose their leaves seasonally, presents a high degree of floristic endemism with extreme meteorological patterns, which make it completely devoid of leaves in the dry season, when only the gray of the trunks and branches are evident, which made it known in the native-American language by the name of Caatinga (i.e., white forest; Prado, 2003). Rainfall in Caatinga (300-1,000 mm/per year) is usually concentrated for about 3-5 months (Sampaio, 1995), with an annual mean temperature of 28 • C (Sampaio, 1995;Campos and Andrade, 2021).…”
