Seasonal and regional signatures of ENSO in upper tropospheric jet characteristics from reanalyses

Abstract: The relationship of upper tropospheric jet variability to El Niño / Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in reanalysis datasets is analyzed for 1979–2018, revealing robust regional and seasonal variability. Tropical jets associated with monsoons and the Walker circulation are weaker and the zonal mean subtropical jet shifts equatorward in both hemispheres during El Niño, consistent with previous findings. Regional and seasonal variations are analyzed separately for subtropical and polar jets. The subtropical jet shifts… Show more

“…NASA’s Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA-2), version 2, is an atmospheric reanalysis intended to serve as a bridge between the first MERRA reanalysis and the project’s long-term aim of developing a linked Earth system reanalysis (Akella et al 2017 ; Manney et al 2021 ). MERRA-2 incorporates observation types not accessible to MERRA’s predecessor, as well as upgrades to the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) model and analytic scheme, to enable a feasible continuous climate analysis beyond MERRA’s endpoint (Gelaro et al 2017 ).…”

“…MERRA-2 products have been extensively compared with those from other reanalyses and found to be well-suited for UTLS studies (e.g., Manney et al, 2017Manney et al, , 2021aHomeyer et al, 2021;Fujiwara et al, 2022;Tegtmeier et al, 2022).…”

“…Despite the jet's proximity to the Hadley Cell edge, it has much weaker trends than observed in the Hadley Cell (e.g., Archer & Caldeira, 2008; Davis & Rosenlof, 2012; Fu & Lin, 2011; Maher et al, 2020), pointing to a gap in our current understanding of subtropical jet dynamics. Regional or synoptic, rather than hemispheric, analyses of subtropical jet behavior in the Australian sector (e.g., Frederiksen & Osbrough, 2022; Gillett et al, 2021; Liu et al, 2021; Manney et al, 2021) improve understanding of trends and the dynamical relationship between the subtropical jet and Hadley Cell.…”
