Searching for the Optimal Rate of Medically Necessary Cesarean Delivery

Abstract: Our findings corroborate the statement that a population-level cesarean section rate above 10-15 percent is hardly justified from the medical perspective.

“…In this population, only 4% of women delivered by caesarean section, and this makes the relative contribution of this variable appear small. However, the caesarean section rate in this area is much lower than the minimum rate needed for optimal maternal and child health [38]. This suggests that the low cesarean rate is probably a result of poor health systems and therefore will become higher as the health systems in the area recover.…”

“…This corresponds to an increase in the CD rate (CDR) from 16.1% to 23.2% between 2002 and 2013. In a recent publication, based on a review of country trends in maternal/newborn mortality rates and CDRs, [13] the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that CDRs above 10 -15% did not confer benefit in terms of reduction in mortality. [14] However, in the same publication the WHO stated that 'every effort should be made to provide caesarean sections to women in need, rather than striving to achieve a specific rate' and 'Caesarean sections should ideally only be undertaken when medically necessary' .…”
