SDG 4 in higher education: challenges and opportunities

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this case study is to focus on the role of higher education in the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, discussing both challenges and opportunities. Drawing on the example of The University of the West Indies (UWI) School of Education (SOE) (Mona Campus in Jamaica), this paper illustrates how higher education can move SDG 4 forward in a realistic and significant way. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on the literature and case study experiences implementing education… Show more

“…Five years after the launch of the SDGs, it is necessary to evaluate the progress and take more concrete actions from the institutions to achieve results before 2030, having as great support the universities with their professors and students who can generate projects based on the SDG with the expected local and national impact. As one of the first studies in Latin America to evaluate student perspectives, we expect that the results will help countries develop specific strategies that contribute to the SDGs they have prioritized, implementing SDG activities in campus [93,94] and courses in each professional career [95,96].…”

“…The latter are those for which less energy and fewer limited resources are used in their manufacturing, sales and consumption processes, those which do not pollute directly or indirectly and those that can be reused [24]. Eco-responsibility in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) does not involve only the environmental dimension of sustainability but its other facets too, that is, the social and economic dimensions [5]. A lack of responsibility in this regard may have a negative effect on the achievement of the SDG, which could have very negative consequences for the world population [18].…”

“…It is subdivided into seven partial targets and target 4.7 specifies the importance of developing sustainability education by advancing theoretical and practical knowledge in support of balanced environmental development [4]. While SDG 4 refers specifically to education, the relationship between this and the other objectives is evident bearing in mind that the achievement of each goal is dependent on education [5]. For example, SDG 12 points to the importance of using technological resources in a responsible manner.…”

“…At present, in the field of natural language processing, scholars are exploring the use of deep learning. Deep learning mainly involves complex neural networks or multiple non-linear functions in multiple data processing layers [5]; initially, deep learning focused on the field of image and voice recognition, and was then used in natural language processing (natural language processing, or NLP). Deep learning in the field of NLP benefits from the research of Hinton and Salakhutdinov (2006) [6] in deep learning in text analysis.…”
