Screening of Chemical Composition, Antioxidant and Anticholinesterase Activity of Section Brevifilamentum of Origanum (L.) Species

Abstract: Brevifilamentum were analyzed for their essential oil and phenolic components. For the essential oil analyses, GC-MS and GC-FID were used. Phenolic contents of the aerial parts of the chloroform, acetone, and methanol extracts were analyzed using LC-MS/MS. Antioxidant activity of the species was investigated by three methods; DPPH free radical scavenging activity, β-carotene linoleic acid assays and CUPRAC assays. Also, acetyl and butyrylcholinesterase inhibition of the extracts were investigated. While the es… Show more

“…Since a higher correlation between phenolics and antioxidant activity has been demonstrated by several studies in aromatic and medicinal plants (39)(40)(41)(42), there is a growing interest in phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which are the most widely occurring chemicals in plants having strong antioxidant properties. Due to the toxic effect of synthetic derivatives humans prefer taking these compounds supplied by nutritional sources such as fruits, vegetables, and herbal tea, which have high phenolic content and good antioxidant capacity.…”

“…The antioxidant activities were measured based on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity (24-30), β-carotene linoleic acid assays (24,26,30) and cupric (Cu 2+ ) ion reducing power assay (CUPRAC) (24,26,(30)(31)(32).…”

“…Many studies to extend the shelf life of minimum processed fruits and vegetables have focused on the methods of preventing Dirmenci et al, 2019;Dirmenci, Yazıcı, Özcan, Celenk, & Martin, 2018). Although, some species of the genus have been proven to have strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activity (Çarıkçı et al, 2018;Yılmaz et al, 2017),…”

“…Turkey is the country has the highest diversification with 21 species (24 taxa) and 13 hybrids, 25 of them endemics (Arabacı, Yazıcı, Özcan, & Dirmenci, 2019; Dirmenci et al., 2019; Dirmenci, Özcan, et al, 2018; Dirmenci, Yazıcı, Özcan, Celenk, & Martin, 2018). Although, some species of the genus have been proven to have strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activity (Çarıkçı et al., 2018; Yılmaz et al., 2017), there are limited studies dealing with their effects on enzymatic activity (Kuijpers et al., 2014; Sarikurkcu et al., 2015).…”
