Screening of 42 medicinal plants for in vivo anthelmintic activity against Dactylogyrus intermedius (Monogenea) in goldfish (Carassius auratus)

Abstract: In the present study, methanol extracts of 42 traditional medicinal plants with potent anthelmintic activity against Dactylogyrus intermedius (Monogenea) in goldfish (Carassius auratus) were investigated. Cinnamomum cassia, Lindera aggregata, and Pseudolarix kaempferi exhibited 100% activity and were selected for further evaluation by applying five solvents (petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water) for the extraction of the samples, followed by the in vivo bioassay. Among the extracts t… Show more

“…Therefore, it is logical to look for novel aquaculture medicines that are both environmentally friendly and highly efficient. Extracts from medicinal plants that could offer possible alternatives to control D. intermedius infection have been reported (Liu et al 2010;Wu et al 2011;Ji et al 2012;Lu et al 2012). In the present study, 24 medicinal plants were evaluated for the in vivo anthelmintic activity against D. intermedius (Monogenea) in Goldfish.…”

“…An in vivo study was designed to determine the anthelmintic activity of extracts to D. intermedius according to the previous method of Ji et al (2012). Five fish previously infected with the parasite were placed in plastic basins (N = 120) of 5 L capacity that were filled with 2 L of aerated groundwater.…”

“…There is an increasing awareness of the potential of natural products from plants, which may lead to the development of much-needed new anti-parasitic drugs, with interesting biological activities of cytotoxic and anti-parasitic properties [2225]. Cinnamomum extracts have been identified as preferred natural antiparasitic agents for the treatment of ectoparasitic louse [26] and mite [27], entoparasites of Dactylogyrus intermedius (a parasitic helminth) [28], Tetratrichomonas gallinarum and Histomonas meleagridis (protozoan parasites) [29], and malaria vector of Anopheles gambiae [30]. No systematic evaluation of molluscicidal or cercaricidal activity of C. camphora extracts against O. hupensis or S. japonicium has been carried out.…”
