Screening Medicinal Plants for Use against Dactylogyrus intermedius (Monogenea) Infection in Goldfish

Abstract: Methanol extracts of 24 traditional medicinal plants with potential anthelmintic activity against Dactylogyrus intermedius (Monogenea) in Goldfish Carassius auratus were investigated. Abrus cantoniensis, Citrus medica, Dioscorea collettii, and Polygonum multiflorum exhibited 100% activity and were selected for further evaluation by applying five solvents (petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water) for the extraction of the samples, followed by an in vivo bioassay. Among the plants tested,… Show more

“…The research and application of medicinal plants with immunostimulatory and antiviral properties in aquaculture are attracting more and more attention (Beltrán et al, ; Reverter, Bontemps, Lecchini, Banaigs, & Sasal, ). There have been many studies focusing on medicinal plants or their ingredients as additives in fish diet, which showed beneficial effects, including promoting growth, invigorating health, weight gain, enhancing the defence mechanisms and immune responses (Awad & Awaad, ; Galina, Yin, Ardó, & Jeney, ; Hu et al, ; Newaj‐Fyzul & Austin, ; Vallejos‐Vidal, Reyes‐López, Teles, & MacKenzie, ). However, a few studies about the medicinal plants or ingredients against grouper iridoviral infection are carried out.…”

“…Polygonum acuminatum Kunth has also been reported to possess antimalarial properties [7]. Very recently, other antiparasite properties of Polygonum species have been reported, including anthelminthic [8,9] and antiprotozoal activities, the latter against an important parasite of fresh water fish, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis [10]. However, Polygonum-derived antiparasitics have yet to be isolated and positively identified.…”
