Screening Mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] Genotypes for Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus Resistance under Natural Condition

Abstract: Mungbean Yellow Mosaic Virus (MYMV), transmitted through the white fly (Bemisia tabaci) in the persistent manner is one of the most pernicious diseases of Vigna species. Twenty-five genotypes of mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] were sown in randomized block design with two replications during the summer season in 2015. The test entries were evaluated against the mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) under natural field conditions. Screening for MYMV resistance was done by planting infector rows along with t… Show more

“…PMR-1 showed field resistance in initial screening during 2015–16 under field condition and was subsequently reconfirmed for its resistance in fields during 2016–17, 2017–18 and 2018–2019. The susceptible genotype, Pusa Vishal was released during the year 2000 for spring-summer cultivation in the North-Western Plain Zones (NWPZ) of India, however, in due course of time, this showed susceptibility to MYMIV infection [ 13 ] ( S1 File ).…”

“…MYMV is most prevalent in Western and Southern India, Thailand and Indonesia, while MYMIV is present in Central, Eastern and Northern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Vietnam [ 3 , 12 ]. Recombination between these two species though does not occur frequently but some reports indicated the occurrence of recombinant viruses in northern India [ 13 ]. Different isolates of MYMIV from northern India have been fully characterized from different legumes [ 11 ].…”

“…Although ricebean is nearly immune to YMD (Sudha et al, 2015), yet due to low cross-compatibility this is occasionally used for the transfer of YMD resistance to mungbean (Sudha et al, 2013a;Bhanu et al, 2017b). Recently, QTL mapping of YMD resistance gene(s) using a RIL population (Mungbean-VRM (Gg) 1 × Ricebean-TNAU RED) through GBS has revealed 05 QTLs having PVE from 10.11 to 20.04%.…”

“…Leaf spot incidence was recorded according 0-9 scale (Mayee and Datar, 1986) whereas incidence of viral diseases was recorded following scale (Ashfaq et al, 2007) and level of resistance and susceptibility were determined. 0-5 Arbitrary Scale used by Bhanu et al (2017) to assess Yellow Mosaic Virus.…”
