Screening for frost tolerance in wheat using the expression of dehydrine genes Wcs120 and Wdhn13 at 17°C

Abstract: Cold induces expression of Cor/Lea genes, in particular of Wcs120 and Wdhn13. The level of the expression at low temperatures was related to the frost tolerance (FT) of wheat cultivars. We studied the expression in five cultivars very different in the FT, at relatively high temperature of 17 and 25°C, respectively. Significant correlations at the 1% level were found at 17°C between the expression level and FT, characterized by correlation coefficients 0.92** and 0.97** for Wcs120 and Wdhn13, respectively. Thes… Show more

“…This set of genotypes was analyzed in three laboratories (CRA-GPG, Fiorenzuola, Italy; Plant Breeding and hardening is associated with the accumulation of COR (cold regulated) proteins. For some of them, for example, COR14 in barley and WCS120 in wheat, a genetic relation between protein accumulation and FT was demonstrated (Fowler et al, 1996;Giorni et al, 1999;Francia et al, 2004;Vítámvás et al, 2007;Kosová et al, 2008;Holková et al, 2009).…”

“…Malz showed the highest expression of both genes after 7 days of stress while in the more tolerant Tadmor it was observed a week later. This finding does not correspond to the generally held notion since more tolerant genotypes exhibit not only a higher expression of stress genes but also an earlier onset of activation of thee genes and a response to lower stress levels [7,13]. Tadmor was repeatedly found to exhibit a later onset of expression of stress genes than other less tolerant varieties.…”

“…U odrůdy Malz byly nejvyšší hodnoty exprese obou genů naměřeny po 7 dnech trvání stresu, zatímco u tolerantnější odrůdy Tadmor až o týden později. Tento výsledek neodpovídá obecné představě, protože tolerantnější genotypy vykazují nejen vyšší hladinu exprese stresových genů, ale i dřívější nástup aktivace těchto genů a reakce na nižší hladinu stresu [7,13]. U odrůdy Tadmor zaznamenáváme opakovaně pozdější nástup exprese stresových genů oproti jiným méně tolerantním odrůdám.…”

“…The level of expression at low temperatures was related to wheat frost tolerance and the expression at relatively high temperatures of 17°C and 25°C (Holková et al. ). Further, we discriminated barley lines for seed vigour when grown in years suitable for high trait levels and low variation in the trait.…”
