Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Curriculum Integration and Sustainability: Social Work and Nursing Faculty Perspectives

Abstract: SBIRT offers an evidence based intervention that uses a public health approach to reduce harm from substance use. As such, professional nursing and social work education programs should teach SBIRT to their master's level practitioners. This paper proposes guidelines for integrating that content into existing curricula.

“…Substance use and treatment are often covered in this course and SBIRT training would complement the learning objectives. Belfiore et al () discussed using a scaffolding approach where SBIRT is threaded throughout the curriculum, specifically in the generalist or core courses. This approach would build on skills previously learned and offer the learner repetition and reinforcement throughout their nursing education.…”

“…The experience can inform referral pathways/mechanisms for specific social problems which are agreed on and endorsed by relevant subnational authorities and social service providers. This should be accompanied with training of primary health care providers, provision of social inquiry tools, and dissemination of information about different services and referral pathways (Belfiore et al 2018;O'Brien et al 2019). The multisectoral coordination mechanisms at provincial and district levels are helpful for sharing information and ensuring social problems are brought up to the competent authorities.…”

“…As benefits of Web-based learning for health care students have become more apparent, researchers have begun to explore the feasibility of incorporating these approaches to advance training and utilization of SBIRT in practice settings [14]. Mixed results have also been reported on the effectiveness of these approaches in terms of presenting the training material, engaging participants, and ensuring that trainees utilize this knowledge in clinical practice settings [6,15]. Further research is required to understand what aspects of Web-based trainings resonate with participants and are more likely to be helpful in continued practice.…”
