Ultrasound‐Guided Percutaneous Iliotibial Band Release for External Coxa Saltans

Abstract: The surgical treatment of external coxa saltans is not standardized. Many techniques for iliotibial release have been described, both open and arthroscopic. No technique describes ultrasound release. In this cadaveric study, we describe a minimally invasive technique for percutaneous iliotibial release with ultrasound guidance, designed to be performed under local anesthesia. The future objective would be to perform an active intraoperative test of the snapping hip to confirm adequate release, thus reducing th… Show more

“…Though arthroscopic techniques have advantages of minimally invasive ness and less soft tissue dissection, open Z plasty is still routinely used due to clear identification of landmarks and easy learning curve compared to arthroscopic technique. [7][8][9] Interpretations obtained are similar to those shown in previous studies. 6 Our patient showed good symptomatic relief following surgery with complete resolution of previous symptoms.…”

“…The diagnosis of recurred external snapping hip is predominantly clinical, but it can be confirmed by ultrasound; high-resolution imaging enables a precise assessment of the anatomic cause of the recurrent snapping during a dynamic examination. 7 Magnetic resonance imaging may be useful for investigation of the causes of recurrence and excludes other causes of hip pain.…”
