Refining and Sulfurization of Oil from Black Soldier Fly and Its Application as Biodegradable Lubricant Additive

Abstract: Black soldier fly (BSF, Hermetia illucens), a high lipid containing insect, is considered as a promising candidate for bioconversion of restaurant waste in China. The fresh oil extracted from BSF larvae were refined by degumming, alkaline neutralization, and absorption decolorization. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that 12:0, 16:0, 18:1, and 18:2 were the main fatty acids, which accounted for more than 80% of the refined BSF oil. Odorless sulfurized BSF oil was synthesized, and the tr… Show more

“…Inspired by the above, scholars have made attempts by using biolubricant in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) for sustainable manufacturing. Triglycerols of fatty acids are the main ingredients of vegetable oils and animal fats, which usually has poor extreme pressure properties [6]. Especially, biolubricant couldn't meet anti-friction and heat-transfer requirements of machining, in which working zone characterized by high-temperature and high-pressure.…”

“…However, the potential of insect-based bio-lubricants, especially from BSF, has not been widely explored by researchers. One of the references found is research conducted by Xiong et al [157]. They researched the use of BSF lipids as a biodegradable lubricant additive.…”

“…Great potentials are held in BSF for its nutritional value. For the inside grease, after extraction, separation, and refinement, could be added into feed (Fawole et al, 2021; Heuel et al, 2021) or cosmetic products (Almeida et al, 2020) as gradients, depending on the depth of refinement, or as raw materials for biodiesel (Zheng et al, 2012; Nguyen et al, 2017; Wang et al, 2017) and biolubricants (Xiong et al, 2020) after transesterification. BSF, as a nova resource insect, is worthy of conducting research on functions of perilipins in lipid homeostasis to maximize its advantages for application.…”
