l‐Arginine and melatonin interaction in rat intestinal ischemia–reperfusion

Abstract: We investigated the combinative effects of L-arginine and melatonin on the contractile responses of terminal ileum after the intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R), in vivo. Male rats were subjected to mesenteric ischemia (30 min) followed by reperfusion (180 min). We have observed a dramatic decrease in spontaneous basal activity and Ach-induced contractile response. Our data clearly showed that the contractility decrease was ameliorated by L-arginine but not by L-NAME. Melatonin has reversed the inhibition of… Show more

“…The process of inflammation is actually a response to various stimuli against those who have given organism. Some of these stimuli are trauma, infection, ischemia/reperfusion and immunological reactions (21,22). Carrageenan-induced paw oedema is a well-established model for evaluating acute inflammation and anti-inflammatory effect of candidate drugs (9).…”

“…The activation of inflammatory cells such as polymorphonuclear leukocytes leads to fast exagreation of the onset of inflammatory reaction. Previous studies have shown that in the pathologenesis of I/R, there is an increase in the amounts of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, cytokines, endotoxins, and neutrophils (2)(3)(4). Several studies have also demonstrated that neutrophils, adhesive molecules and endothelial cells are responsible for serious and deleterious cellular inflammatory dysfunction caused by intestinal I/R injury (3,4).…”

Several studies have also demonstrated that neutrophils, adhesive molecules and endothelial cells are responsible for serious and deleterious cellular inflammatory dysfunction caused by intestinal I/R injury (3,4). It is well known that the produced reactive oxygen or nitrogen species and oxidative damage are the main responsibles of cell death and organ dysfunction in intestinal I/R (3,5).…”

“…It is well known that oxygen reperfusion of tissue is to aggravate the injury of cells (24). On this account re-oxygenation should be by steps in mine workers.…”
