COVID ‐19 pandemic‐related lockdown: response time is more important than its strictness

Abstract: The rapid spread of SARS‐CoV‐2 and its threat to health systems worldwide have led governments to take acute actions to enforce social distancing. Previous studies used complex epidemiological models to quantify the effect of lockdown policies on infection rates. However, these rely on prior assumptions or on official regulations. Here, we use country‐specific reports of daily mobility from people cellular usage to model social distancing. Our data‐driven model enabled the extraction of lockdown characteristic… Show more

“…The need for early adoption of containment measures was also demonstrated by Loewenthal et al who found strong correlation between the time at which containment measures were initiated and the number of deaths 27 . Based on their results, delay of 7.49 days in initiating containment measures would result in two-fold increase in the number of deaths.…”

“…Countries, which were top ranking based on their cumulative incidences (LU, BE, and ES), typically scored low on the pre-epidemic cCHIs (respective ranks 27,18,19), and low or intermediate on the cCHIs for day 14 (ranks 11,26,15). In contrast, countries scoring lowest on the cumulative incidence (SK, BG and HU), scored high in the cumulative CHIs both in preepidemic period (ranks 1, 6, and 5) and epidemic days 1-14 (ranks 1, 2 and 3).…”

“…Still, it should be noted that time is a critical factor in combating this pandemic. Less restrictive measures adopted in an early stage of the pandemic can have such a good result, superior to the more restrictive measures adopted in late stages [27].…”

“…Our data stop on the boundaries of these questions and cannot answer them, but we emphasize the importance of taking these points into consideration when health policymakers make relevant decisions – since one of the most important lessons learned from the world’s experience with the pandemic is that “time of action matters” [ 38 ].…”
