CASC2: An emerging tumour‐suppressing long noncoding RNA in human cancers and melanoma

Abstract: Deregulation of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) has been implicated in tumourigenesis. Cancer Susceptibility Candidate 2 (CASC2) is a lncRNA downregulated in multiple cancer types, including endometrial, lung, gastric and colorectal cancers. CASC2 functions as a tumour-suppressive lncRNA though multiple mechanisms, such as sequestration of oncogenic microRNAs and repression of Wnt/β-catenin signalling. Pertinent to clinical practice, the use of CASC2 as a prognostic marker has been demonstrated in sporadic studi… Show more

“…Of greater importance considering the present study, lncRNAs have been also identified as crucial regulators in the carcinogenesis and progression of multiple types of cancer, where they function as oncogenes or tumor suppressors, depending on the cancer type and the prevailing circumstances (8-10). In the case of SM, an increasing body of evidence has indicated that lncRNAs are also involved in the regulation of the expression and function of established oncogenes or tumor suppressors, either post-transcriptionally or via chromatin regulation (11-13). Nevertheless, only a small number of lncRNAs have been functionally characterized at present, and the mechanisms underlying their biological functions are yet to be fully elucidated.…”

“…For the 5 identified lncRNA markers, CASC2 has been reported to be associated with colorectal cancer [33][34][35]. Studies have revealed that the deregulation of CASC2 by miRNA hsa-mir-21 and hsa-mir-18a increases the proliferation and migration of cancer cells in colorectal cancer [33][34][35].…”
