Emerging role of long non‑coding RNAs in pulmonary hypertension and their molecular mechanisms (Review)

Abstract: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening cardiopulmonary condition caused by several pathogenic factors. All types of PH are characterized by the excessive proliferation of pulmonary artery endothelial cells and pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells, apoptosis resistance, pulmonary vascular remodeling, sustained elevated pulmonary arterial pressure, right heart failure and even death. Over the past decade, next generation sequencing, particularly RNA-sequencing, has identified some long non-coding RNAs… Show more

“…An animal or cellular model of hypoxia is the basis for the majority of the lncRNAs discussed previously in the article. Furthermore, utilizing the tissues of PAH patients, other lncRNAs, such as Lnc-Ang362, PAXIP1-AS1, MEG3, and MALAT1, have been investigated [ 133 ]. One need to supplement is idiopathic PAH (IPAH), IPAH patients are essentially PAH patients, and research has revealed a close relationship between lncRNAs and iPAH.…”

“…Currently, the molecular mechanisms of lncRNA in PAH mainly focus on proliferation, migration and apoptosis of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells and dysfunction of pulmonary artery endothelial cells [42]. The mechanism of action of lncRNA-TCONS_00008552 was not explored further because the sequence, structure and function of lncRNAs are poorly conserved across species.…”

“…The functional and mechanistic role of PASMCs in the development of PH is still largely unknown. Only few lncRNAs have been investigated in endothelial cells of PH, while the majority of lncRNA studies have concentrated on their regulatory role of the PASMCs during the development of PH [ 33 , 71 , 72 , 73 ]. LncRNA functionality is dependent on subcellular localization, which is critical in understanding lncRNA interaction partners, mechanism and translational potential [ 27 ].…”
