3D morphological classification of the nasolacrimal duct: Anatomical study for planning treatment of tear drainage obstruction

Abstract: Background The purpose of this study is to analyze and classify morphological features of the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) through 3D reconstruction to help understand the causes and treatment of NLD obstruction. Methods In this study, we included 63 males and 55 females who underwent autopsy without NLD obstruction with ages ranging from 20 to 78 years. The NLD was defined from the lacrimal fossa to the opening of the BNLD to the inferior meatus, and all continuous CT images showing the NLD were selected. Segmenta… Show more

“…Using CT-DCG scans, this research studied the obstructed positions of all PANDO patients and found that the most common obstructed sites were around the entrance to the NLD, which is consistent with previous studies [22][23][24] . Individual variations in the levels of obstructions were also observed, with almost half of the obstructions occurring in the lacrimal sac, at a site higher than the entrance of the NLD.…”

“…Besides these clinical studies, there were a few radiologic studies focusing on morphometry of the NLD. [1,5,6,21] Ela et al [6] studied the morphometry of NLD on children, while Czyz et al [5] examined the NLD morphometry according to aeration grades in adult participants. However, they could not find any significant differences for morphometric values of the NLD between age and genders.…”

“…The NLD is entirely surrounded by the maxilla. [1] The obstructions of the NLD are seen frequently, due to its shape. The obstructions can be either congenital or acquired.…”
