Scopolamine impairs auditory delayed matching-to-sample performance in monkeys

Abstract: Information concerning the major neurotransmitters critical for auditory memory is sparse. One possibility is the cholinergic system, important for performance in some tasks requiring visual short-term memory and attention [T.G. Aigner, M. Mishkin, The effects of physostigmine and scopolamine on recognition memory in monkeys, Behav. Neural. Biol. 45 (1986) 81-87; N. Hironaka, K. Ando, Effects of cholinergic drugs on scopolamine-induced memory impairment in rhesus monkeys, Jpn. J. Psychopharmacol. 16 (1996) 103… Show more

“…One likely possibility is through effects on food motivational or consummatory processes. While the effects of systemic scopolamine administration on food motivation are mixed (Khokhlova et al 2001; Plakke et al 2008), scopolamine infused directly into the nucleus accumbens is reported to decrease food consumption (Perry et al 2010; Pratt and Blackstone 2009). Such an effect is consistent with the increase in trial omissions produced by both muscarinic antagonists (i.e., reductions in food motivation via prefeeding have similar effects in these and other choice tasks; Simon et al 2009; St.…”

“…Baseline firing rate has been subtracted from each curve. (Chudasama et al 2004;Penetar and McDonough 1983;Plakke et al 2008;Taffe et al 1999;Yamamoto et al 2011). If, however, accuracy at zero-delay length trials is also compared with variable longer delays, an effect of delay length is found (Buccafusco et al 2007).…”

“…The experiments were carried out between January 2008 and August 2010 at the University of Iowa. Both monkeys had prior experience with similar auditory DMTS tasks [Ng et al., ; Plakke et al., ]. The animals were housed in individual cages on a 12:12 h light/dark cycle with ad libitum access to water and controlled feeding schedules.…”
