Purpose This paper aims to examine the impact of Zakat avoidance on firm value and investigates how board characteristics moderate this relationship within the context of Saudi Arabia, a Muslim nation. Design/methodology/approach Using panel data from 2009 to 2020, encompassing 78 nonfinancial firms listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange, this study constructs an enhanced measure of Zakat avoidance that integrates insights from tax avoidance research, Shariah principles and the regulations of the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority. This research uses empirical techniques, including panel data regressions and interaction analysis to investigate how board characteristics may influence this relationship. Findings Descriptive analysis reveals pervasive Zakat compliance, underscoring the effectiveness of Saudi Arabia’s robust Zakat system. Regression results indicate a positive association between Zakat payment and firm value. Remarkably, board characteristics exhibit no significant link to Zakat avoidance, emphasizing the potency of the Zakat system and religious adherence. However, the moderation analysis reveals that board independence and meeting frequency positively moderate the relationship between Zakat avoidance and firm value. Practical implications The study emphasizes the vital importance of upholding Zakat obligations to cultivate trust among stakeholders and amplify firm value. It advocates for governance frameworks that foster vigilant oversight and independence, ultimately enhancing a firm’s overall worth. Furthermore, the study’s findings provide valuable insights for corporate leaders, investors, policymakers and society as a whole, facilitating the promotion of ethical financial conduct and driving holistic economic development. Originality/value This research introduces novel insights by scrutinizing the intricate interplay of Zakat avoidance, board dynamics and firm value within the context of a culturally distinctive emerging economy. The development of a distinct Zakat avoidance metric, along with comprehensive empirical assessment, contributes to the originality of the study. Moreover, the investigation into the moderating influence of board characteristics adds value to the existing body of knowledge.

Digital banks are part of the digitalization of financial institutions which aims to facilitate financial inclusion for all groups. Sharia digital banks are a type of banking institution that provides practical and easy online services based on sharia principles so that customers do not need to come to a branch office. Sharia digital banks are among the latest innovations in the banking industry in Indonesia. This article aims to analyze the internal and external conditions of Islamic digital banks in Indonesia and formulate strategies that will be implemented by Islamic digital banks to take advantage of strengths and opportunities and overcome weaknesses and threats. This research uses the SWOT method. The results show several strengths (such as being the first pure digital Islamic bank in Indonesia, recipient of the Most Promising Islamic Digital Bank 2021 award at the CNBN Indonesia Award 2021), weaknesses (such as requiring a supporting internet connection), opportunities (such as: continued growth of internet users in Indonesia), and threats (such as cybercrime attacks). Based on the results of the SWOT analysis, the comparative advantage cell, mobilization cell, divestment/investment cell and damage control cell were obtained.

The review synthesizes information from a wide range of sources, including industry reports, academic literature, case studies, and expert interviews, to provide a comprehensive understanding of AI's role in the banking industry. The key findings of the review indicate that AI has significantly improved operational efficiencies in banks by automating routine tasks and enhancing decision-making processes. AI applications in customer service, such as chatbots and virtual assistants, have transformed customer interactions by offering round-the-clock support and personalized financial advice. In the realm of risk management, AI algorithms have proven effective in detecting fraudulent activities and managing credit risks, outperforming traditional methods through advanced data analysis capabilities. Additionally, AI is playing a crucial role in helping banks comply with regulatory requirements by automating compliance processes and conducting real-time transaction monitoring. The review concludes that AI offers substantial opportunities for innovation and efficiency in the US banking sector. However, it also highlights the challenges associated with AI adoption, including ethical issues, data privacy concerns, and the imperative for workforce up skilling. The paper emphasizes the need for a strategic approach to AI integration in banking, where technological advancements are balanced with human oversight, ethical considerations, and regulatory compliance to maximize the benefits of AI while mitigating its risks
