Scientific collaboration of Cuban researchers working in Europe: understanding relations between origin and destination countries

Abstract: The global network of scientific collaboration created by researchers opens new opportunities for developing countries to engage in the process of knowledge creation historically lead by institutions in the developed world. The results discussed here explore how Cubans working in European science and technology might contribute to extending the scientific collaboration of the country through their ties with Cuban institutions mainly in the academic sector. A bibliometric method was used to explore the pattern … Show more

“…The Cuban scholars who have left Cuba could be a strength; they offer a significant opportunity because those scholars maintain their links with their colleagues on the island; they continue collaborating and serve indirectly as bridges between their hosting scientific institutions in Europe, North America, or Latin America to the scientists in Cuba. This strategy's main weakness is that the longer the Cuban scholars remain away from home, collaboration with Cuba may decline [60]. This effect is like the strategies used by pool game players.…”

“…Bibliometric is a new method for summarizing progress in a research field and further identifying hot spots or rising patterns in the research area by creating info graphics. Several biometric programs have been used to focus on the zone of scientometrics or social science (18)(19)(20), including CiteSpace (21), CitNetExplorer, VOSviewer (22), and HistCite (23). Many researchers have made similar endeavors within the field of biomedicine.…”

“…The intellectual association of scholars through collaborative efforts is indicative of the knowledge creation process in scientific research and systematic progression in the field (Acedo et al, 2006). Worldwide expansion of the author network allows increased engagement of the scientific community across geographical boundaries (Palacios‐Callender & Roberts, 2018). With the involvement of multiple authors, the scientific document is likely to have fewer mistakes, varied perspective and contributions from cross‐disciplines, leading to enriched research publications (Tahamtan, Afshar, & Ahamdzadeh, 2016).…”
