Online world demands new sets of characteristics to warrant the ability to cope with its constantly evolving challenges and risks. Digital citizenship, a concept introduced, focusing on new ways of learning and exploring in an online environment safely, securely, and appropriately. The evolution of digital citizenship could be seen along with the changes in technology used in education, and requires students to engage with technology longer hours than before. Thus, how can we approach the challenge of using technology actively and immersively, while maintaining sanity and wellness, and building resilience to potential online risk? Thus, this conceptual paper proposes a new concept of digital citizenship by bridging the notions of wellness and resilience from the psychology discipline into digital citizenship, for its feasibility in the Malaysian educational context. This paper argues the necessity and potential integration of the spiritual element that is lacking in the existing digital citizenship concept, which has proven its significance in enhancing wellness and resilience of adolescent in the literature. It is hoped this fourth wave of proposed digital citizenship concept would bring fruitful discussion and contribute to a better understanding of how one might better socialize online or participate with others in a positive and meaningful way. Thus, only then, digital resilience and digital wellness will be established and a better future online society will be formed.

This study aims to find a method of Islamic parenting styles, as an effort to prevent violence against children in schools. With the literature study method, verses from the Quran and Hadith are studied to obtain a formulation of Islamic parenting in Islamic families. The formulation is then applied as an effort to protect children in the school environment. The research found that parenting in Islamic families is carried out as early as possible before a child is born. The parenting style not only includes physical and intellectual aspects, but also includes emotional and spiritual aspects. The verses of the Quran and Hadith hint at the values of education in the Islamic family which include aspects of “aqidah”, worship, and morals. The Quran also mentions that parenting should be done by giving role model and teaching wisdom to children. These educational values can shape children into a piety person, has the nature of “ihsan” and “istiqomah” and far from any violence attitudes. Children are also educated to not only be individual children, but also to have concern for others. With comprehensive aspects of education through Islamic parenting in Islamic families, children are educated to become individuals of character and noble character. Thus, acts of violence against children in schools can be prevented.

Educating delinquent youths: A qualitative approach to understand the Malaysian story

Background: This paper reports on the first stage of a larger research project on the education of delinquent youths in Malaysia. Specifically, this paper addresses the challenges of educating delinquent youths in the country. As a developing nation, Malaysia faces various issues pertaining social and youth development. The question explored in this study is whether delinquent youths in Malaysia are neglected in terms of systematic and adequate education. In Malaysia, delinquent youths are sent to correctional facilities all around the country, where they are separated from school systems, their families and communities; it can be argued that these youths are deprived of moral support from society. This paper aims to identify the challenges around educating delinquent youths in Malaysia and to recommend potential solutions to these challenges. Methods: The research approaches adopted for this paper included content analysis of printed documents and preliminary informal interviews with the staff at one correctional facility. Content analysis data were gathered from departmental and government documents made public as well as past research on delinquent youths. Meanwhile, a curtesy visit was made to a correctional facility in Kuala Lumpur to obtain preliminary input into the education and training provided at the facility. Results: The authors found that there are three main challenges to sufficiently educating delinquent youths in Malaysia. These include unclear policy on the education of youths at correctional facilities; the lack of frameworks facilitating the education of these youths; and the lack of awareness and understanding on the need for educating these youths, despite their behaviors. Conclusions: The paper ends with two solutions to these challenges and future directions for the education of delinquent youths in Malaysia.
