Scholarly publishing in the Internet age: a citation analysis of computer science literature

Abstract: The Web is revolutionizing the entire scholarly communication process and changing the way that researchers exchange information. In this paper, we analyze two views of information production and use in computer-related research based on citation analysis of PDF and Postcript formatted publications on the Web using autonomous citation indexing (ACI), and a parallel citation analysis of the journal literature indexed by the Institute for Scienti®c Information (ISI) in SCISEARCH. Our goal is to establish a basel… Show more

“…Our previous studies have provided evidence that citation analysis studies using CiteSeer as a data source are as valid as those using SCI (Zhao & Logan, 2002;Zhao, 2003). More information about CiteSeer can be found in Bar-Ilan (2001), Goodrum et al (2001), Lawrence et al (1999), and Zhao & Strotmann (2004).…”

“…Two pages, which separately co-occur relatively frequently in sessions with another, third page can be considered as "indirectly associated". A similar idea was investigated in scientific citation analysis (Goodrum et al, 2001;Lawrence et al, 1999) and hyperlink (structure) analysis of the web (Henzinger, 2001;Weiss et al, 1996). Two scientific papers or web pages in which another document (page) is cited (linked) are supposed to be similar.…”

“…In the context of university web sites patterns of informal scholarly communication may perhaps be traceable in a way that has not previously been possible (e.g. Cronin et al, 1998;Ingwersen, 1998;Goodrum et al, 2001) in order to complement existing bibliometric techniques (e.g. Glänzel, 2001).…”
