Schneiderian Membrane Thickness and Clinical Implications for Sinus Augmentation: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Regression Analyses

Abstract: SMT is, on average, 1 mm in patients seeking sinus augmentation. Three-dimensional technologies overestimate approximately 2.5 times SMT when compared with histologic analysis. Periodontitis and smoking may result in thickening of the sinus membrane. However, current data were inconclusive to link SMT to the rate of membrane damage.

“…An intact Schneiderian membrane, which usually averages approximately 1 mm in thickness, plays a crucial role in containing the inserted bone graft. 20 It should be kept intact to avoid the loss of graft material and to provide coverage that offers vascular function.…”

“…4,5 The maxillary sinus membrane, Schneiderian membrane, consists of ciliated respiratory epithelium and exhibits radiographic thickness of 0.8 ± 1.2 to 1.99 ± 2.1 mm. [8][9][10] In particular, male patients, smokers, and patients over 60 years of age are reported to possess thicker maxillary sinus mucosa.
