SceneMaker: Automatic Visualisation of Screenplays

Abstract: Abstract. Our proposed software system, SceneMaker, aims to facilitate the production of plays, films or animations by automatically interpreting natural language film scripts and generating multimodal, animated scenes from them. During the generation of the story content, SceneMaker will give particular attention to emotional aspects and their reflection in fluency and manner of actions, body posture, facial expressions, speech, scene composition, timing, lighting, music and camera work. “…The early systems provided the users with only one representative picture, as described in [31], whereas later systems have provided users with a set of images based on their relevance and have also provided an appropriate layout. More sophisticated outputs in the form of 3D animations with sound effects and displayed emotions are also available, as described in [22]. 10.…”

“…The CONFUCIUS system is also capable of converting single sentences into corresponding 3D animations [38]. Its successor, SceneMaker [22], expands CONFUCIUS by adding common-sense knowledge for genre specification, emotional expressions, and capturing emotions from the scripts.…”

“…Although a number of papers have dealt with issues involved in story illustration [15,23], most existing techniques rely on text understanding module to interpret the input sentences and construct a set of visual representations based on a user-provided database. For instance, Liu and Leung [23] develop a system called ScriptViz, allowing users to visualize screenplays automatically via realistic, animated 3D graphics.…”

“…The AnimNL system [14] was dedicated to the visualization of procedural instructions using a virtual agent with the aim of ultimately using instructions to control the behavior of virtual humans. SceneMaker [6] generated animations from film scripts, including some staging elements; this followed work on virtual agent animation from NL [9].…”
