It is important to understand the movement disorders of the scapula in the treatment of cervical and upper extremity patients. The scapula and cervical vertebrae are connected by the Levator scapulae. Because of this connection, a problem in position such as inferior medial rotation of the scapula may cause structural problems that cause repeated soft tissue damage of the cervical spine. In treating cervical spine patients, it is important to understand the alignment and movement of the scapular bone to the patient, and to ask for improvement in muscle strength to maintain movement.
