Scanning the visual world: a study of patients with homonymous hemianopia

Abstract: Objectives-This study examined the scanpaths of patients with homonymous hemianopia while viewing naturalistic pictures in their original and also spatially filtered forms. Features of their scanpaths with respect to various saccade and fixation parameters were examined to determine whether they develop compensatory eye movement strategies. The eVects of various lesion parameters including location, size, and age on the evolution of such strategies were considered. Methods-Eye movements of eight patients with … Show more

“…Deficits of higher perceptual functions were also found such as impaired figureground segregation [12,13] and maladaptive patterns of visual field search [14,15]. Importantly, in all studies that compared reaction time (RT) between patients and control subjects, regardless of whether simple [16,11,17] or more complex stimuli were used [12,13,18], RT was found to be significantly longer in patients.…”

“…17 To this end, evaluation of features of scan paths as a base for eye movement strategies was reported. 18 Another example is saccadic visual search training 19 and optokinetic therapy. 20 An obvious limitation of our study is its observational character, ie, we are lacking a control group of untreated hemianopes.…”

“…Hemianopia (blindness in half the visual field) is the most common, followed by quadrantanopia (blindness in one quarter of the visual field) 4 . Individuals with HVFDs exhibit slow and inefficient exploration 5,6 , are visually disoriented and experience problems such as finding objects, avoiding obstacles and reading. Their impairment has a significant negative impact on quality of life [7][8][9] , and spontaneous recovery is limited 10,11 .…”
