Scanning Electron Microscopy on the Perithecial Development of Phyllactinia corylea on Mulberry‐II. Sexual Stage

Abstract: Development of perithecia of Phyllactinia corylea (Pers.) Karst. on mulberry (Morus spp.) leaves was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Two short specialized structures, antheridium and ascogonium, emerged from two separate hyphae, were fused with each other and developed into an egg-shaped perithecial primordia. These primordia later developed into globose immature perithecia, which covered with protruded wall cells with clear margins. A large number of hyphae emerged from near the base of globose peri… Show more

“…Mulberry (Morus) is a perennial woody tree species and is widely cultivated all over the world, and its leaves have been used as the natural food for silkworms for thousands of years (He et al 2013). It is susceptible to various diseases throughout its life, and these diseases will seriously affect the yield and quality of mulberry leaves, which will have a serious impact on sericulture production (Kumar and Gupta 2004). Because silkworm is very sensitive to pesticides, the improper use of pesticides will have adverse effects on silkworm growth and development, and even cause the death of silkworm (Ji et al 2008).…”

“…Its leaves are the chief food for the mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori L.). Mulberry trees are susceptible to a number of diseases that can occur throughout their life cycle, and which are found in different agroclimatic zones [1]. Mulberry dwarf (MD) is one of the most serious infec-tious of these diseases [2].…”

“…Mulberry ( Morus alba L.) is the sole food plant of the silkworm ( Bombyx mori L.) during its entire larval period and is often affected by a number of diseases prevalent around the year in different agroclimatic zones (Kumar & Gupta, 2004). Among the diseases affecting mulberry, bacterial wilt of mulberry has recently been recognized as one of the most destructive bacterial diseases (Wang et al , 2007).…”
