Scale-Up of Microwave-Assisted Reactions in a Multimode Bench-Top Reactor

Abstract: An evaluation of a new bench-top microwave batch reactor that uses a single 1 L reaction vessel is presented. Several microwave-assisted organic reactions have been scaled-up, including Newman Kwart and DielsÀAlder reactions, Pd-catalyzed crosscouplings, heterocycle synthesis, aromatic substitution, and a Knoevenagel condensation. A range of different solvents (high and low microwave absorbing), varying reaction times (4 s up to 2 h), and temperatures (120À250°C) have been explored in these investigations. For… Show more

“…The scale-up of microwave synthesis from the laboratory to process and production scale is a challenging area. Two different approaches for microwave synthesis on a larger scale have emerged: batch synthesis in larger multimode reactors or continuous/stop flow techniques [5].…”

“…In the last 5-10 years, several papers have been published with examples of scale-up under microwave-assisted conditions [94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105]. Of special interest were the topics of reaction optimization, the energy efficiency of microwave heating, and the challenge of scale-up.…”
