Serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAcP) activity is considered to be a biochemical marker of bone resorption. Recently, a lack of specificity of collagen-related markers for assessing bone turnover has been observed in patients with chronic liver disease. Thus, it could be of great interest to determine serum TRAcP activity in such patients. However, nonspecificity of the analytical reaction could occur when hemolyzed, lipemic, or icteric specimens are analyzed. Therefore, we have studied the interference caused by bilirubin in the measurement of serum TRAcP activity using the Hillmann method. The interference was assessed in two pools of serum containing different bilirubin concentrations but with similar total AcP levels. Mixing proportional parts of the two pools, 10 samples were also obtained. Serum activities of total AcP and TRAcP, and the concentration of bilirubin were measured in the 10 samples. Both the actual and the expected values obtained by theoretical calculations were compared. Serum bilirubin values of 2.4 mg/dl showed a negative interference of 15% in the determination of serum TRAcP activity, whereas values of bilirubin higher than 10 mg/dl interfered totally with the measurement of serum TRAcP. Bilirubin did not interfere with the total AcP determination. This study clearly shows the interference of bilirubin in the determination of serum TRAcP. This finding should be considered when bone metabolism disorders are evaluated in jaundiced patients.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most diagnosed cancer in 112 countries and the second leading cause of death in men in 48 countries. We studied the outstanding agents silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and Spirulina algae (Sp) for the management of PCa once as monotherapy or last as a combination. PCa in rats was induced using bicalutamide (Casodex®) and testosterone, followed by (7, 12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene). Then, testosterone was injected s.c. for 3 months. Rats were divided into six groups, with 12 rats in each group. Group I was assigned as the control (co), group II as the PCa model, group III treated with AgNPs, group IV treated with Spirulina extract, group V treated with a combination of AgNPs plus Spirulina, and group VI treated with bicalutamide. The results show that AgNPs could normalize IL-6 levels and could overcome the hormonal disturbance induced in PCa rats along the hypothalamic–pituitary–testis axis. Spirulina revealed a significant reduction in the level of total and free prostatic specific antigen (PSA) to the same level as bicalutamide treatment, which was the same as the control group. Histopathological study revealed regression (75%) of the histological pattern of high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) for Spirulina alone, and (50%) for bicalutamide. The best effect on IL-6 decline was reached with the AgNPs/Spirulina combination as well as bicalutamide treatment compared with the PCa group. Bicalutamide treatment significantly decreased the PSA concentration relative to the PCa group and reached the normal level. Adding Spirulina to AgNPs as a combination enhanced its effect on all mentioned drawbacks associated with PCa except hormonal imbalance that needs more adjustments.

Serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is considered a biological marker of bone resorption as it is synthesised by osteoclasts. Oestrogens inhibit bone resorption, and this may justify the influence of this hormone on osteoclastic activity. Thus, we have quantified serum TRAP levels in women to define their biological profile and observe any changes in relation to their hormone status.The TRAP level of 18 girls under 5 years of age was 8.1 f 1.7 u/l. This value decreased ( P < 0.001) in girls aged 5 to 12 years ( n = 20, mean 6.3 k 1.3u/l). Following the menarche, another decrease was observed in 12 to 15 year old girls ( n = 25, mean 5.5 5 0.6u/l, P < 0.01). The mean TRAP value continued to decrease during the childbearing years, 16 to 48 ( n = 40,3.8 f 0.3 u/l, P < 0.001). Finally, the mean level increased again at the menopause ( n = 26, 4.5 f 0.4u/l, P < 0@01). In women, serum TRAP changes reflect the dependence of bone modelling and turnover on hormone status.
