In this paper, we propose an offline rollback traffic avoidance method for the snapshot routing in cyclic mobile networks. Since the snapshot routing tables are switched simultaneously, part of the traffic may be sent back on some links if the new routing path contains the same links but with reversed forwarding direction against the old one. To avoid the rollback traffic, we first formulate the rollback traffic avoidance problem as an integer programming problem which is NP-hard, and then we propose an approximate algorithm called Inter-Snapshot Rollback Traffic Avoidance (ISRTA), to pursuit the approximate optimal solutions. Simulation results show that our method can efficiently eliminate the rollback paths and traffic in the Iridium system. Although the global average network delay is increased slightly, the extra end to end delay caused by rollback traffic is eliminated and the packet loss rate is reduced.

Snapshot routing algorithm is widely applied in satellite networks to reduce the impact caused by the dynamic varying topology. When the satellite network topology changes, the snapshot routing table in each satellite switches to the predefined new one automatically. Originally, snapshot routing tables switch synchronously in all satellites, and a major part of the network routing paths change in a flash. As a result, a lot of rollback traffic caused by the routing path changes produces many transient routing loops. In this paper, we analyzed the cause of the transient routing loops in satellite networks, such as predictable and unpredictable network topology changes. Based on the ordering update method and time-based update method, we proposed the group partitioning synchronous (GPS) update method for the predictable topology changes and the source routing based multicast (SRM) update method for the unpredictable changes. Results show that our methods can efficiently avoid the transient routing loops in satellite networks with acceptable convergence time, reduced transmission hops and lower network overhead.

Josh Rabemanantsoa was born in Fianarantsoa, Madagascar. He received the Master degree in telecommunications from the University of Rennes 1, France, in 2005, where he is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree. His research interests include antennas for mobile communication systems Ala Sharaiha (SM'09) received the Ph.D. and Habilitation à Diriger la Recherche (HDR) degrees in telecommunication from the University of Rennes 1, France, in 1990 and 2001, respectively.Currently, he is a Professor at the University of Rennes 1, Rennes, and a Researcher in the Antennas and High Frequency Group, Institute of Telecommunication of Rennes, where he is responsible of a research theme concerning the new concepts and architecture of antennas design. Main research activities include broadband and UWB antennas, miniaturization, printed spiral and helical antennas, antennas for mobile communications, etc. He conducted and involved in more than 15 development projects for private companies and participates in the European Network of Excellence ACE (Antenna Center of Excellence) in the small antenna WP. He is the author and coauthor of 35 international papers, 105 conference presentations and holds ten European patents.Prof. Sharaiha is a reviewer for the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION, the IEEE ANTENNAS AND WIRELESS PROPAGATION LETTERS, the IET Letters and the IET Microwave Antennas Propagation.
