Size Reduced Multi-Band Printed Quadrifilar Helical Antenna

Abstract: Josh Rabemanantsoa was born in Fianarantsoa, Madagascar. He received the Master degree in telecommunications from the University of Rennes 1, France, in 2005, where he is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree. His research interests include antennas for mobile communication systems Ala Sharaiha (SM'09) received the Ph.D. and Habilitation à Diriger la Recherche (HDR) degrees in telecommunication from the University of Rennes 1, France, in 1990 and 2001, respectively.Currently, he is a Professor at the Unive… Show more

“…The axial length of a conventional printed QHA is miniaturized of about 43% by meandering and turning the helix arms into the form of square spirals. 10 However, these methods often degrade the reception reliability of the system because of their narrow matching bandwidth and reduced gain. For conventional resonant QHA, the impedance bandwidth is typically extremely narrow (i.e., only about 3%).…”

“…Patch antenna is the simplest design and can be easily modelled and customized. The passage of current through discontinues and rectangular slots created at each of the edges of the microstrip transmission line result in the radiation through excitation by Rabemanantsoa and Sharaiha [14]. The radiation thus originated at the edges enables the antenna to seem slightly bigger electrically than its actual physical structure and dimensions.…”

“…Circularly polarized antenna has been generally used in satellite communication systems due to their insensitivity to ionospheric polarization rotation [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. In many applications such as mobile satellite communication and position-location, the systems require antennas exhibiting a good radiation performance with a wide beamwidth over the operating band.…”

“…Moreover, for feeding the four helix arms with equal power and 90 • of phase shifting between adjacent ports, the conventional network is relatively large in size at low frequency [2]. And external or commercial feeding system providing almost ideal magnitude and phase shifting is not practical for antenna system [1,[4][5][6][7]. Therefore, PQHAs with a compact size employing a simple and compact feeding network are then required.…”
