Satellite-Observed Variations and Trends in Carbon Monoxide over Asia and Their Sensitivities to Biomass Burning

Abstract: As the carbon monoxide (CO) total column over Asia is among the highest in the world, it is important to characterize its variations in space and time. Using Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) and Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) satellite data, the variations and trends in CO total column over Asia and its seven subregions during 2003–2017 are investigated in this study. The CO total column in Asia is higher in spring and winter than in summer and autumn. The seasonal maximum and minimum… Show more

“…The monthly changes of the carbon monoxide concentrations were evident during the Figures 9, 10, 11. The highest concentrations were in the cold months and the lowest concentrations in the hot months this is in agreement with reference [19], and this behavior was clear and correlated for both areas in Abu Ghraib and Al Zafaraniyah region. These Figures also clarified that the concentrations in the Zafaraniya area were higher than the concentrations in Abu Ghraib area throughout the study period.…”

“…2, right column) is shown. Global CO sources are mainly from anthropogenic activities (500-600 Tg yr -1 ) and biomass burning (300-600 Tg yr -1 ) (Zhang et al, 2020). Biomass burning plays an important role in global CO concentrations.…”

“…They attributed the overall decreasing trend near Moscow to transitioning from domestic to imported cars with catalytic converters. Recently, column CO trends were again shown to have decreased over China during [2003][2004][2005][2006][2007][2008][2009][2010][2011][2012][2013][2014][2015][2016][2017], with no significant trends over India and Indonesia (Zhang et al, 2020).…”
