Satellite and Numerical Model Investigation of Two Heavy Rain Events over the Central Mediterranean

Abstract: Two heavy rain events over the Central Mediterranean basin, which are markedly different by genesis, dimensions, duration, and intensity, are analyzed. Given the relative low frequency of this type of severe storms in the area, a synoptic analysis describing their development is included. A multispectral analysis based on geostationary multifrequency satellite images is applied to identify cloud type, hydrometeor phase, and cloud vertical extension. Precipitation intensity is retrieved from (i) surface rain ga… Show more

“…A flash flood episode affected a small area in Puglia on 22 October 2005 . A tropical-like cyclone affected southeastern Italy on 26 September 2006 (Moscatello et al, 2008;Laviola et al, 2011). The small scales of motion involved, meso-β and meso-γ scales, make it difficult to numerically model these extreme events.…”

“…Overall our experimental design is based on the past studies of WRF for local rainfall events in the same region that stressed the two-way nesting: Miglietta et al (2008), Moscatello et al (2008, Laviola et al (2011) andMastrangelo et al (2011), among the others.…”

“…This unique dataset combined with the strong intensity of the medicane motivated a number of studies using numerical experiments (Moscatello et al, 2008a;Davolio et al, 2009;Miglietta et al, 2011;Laviola et al, 2011) and satellite observations (Claud et al, 2010;Conte et al, 2011). The overview of the case given below is based on these previous studies.…”

“…Differently from the majority of these vortices, which spend their lifetime over the sea, this cyclone crossed southeastern Italy for about an hour and offered the opportunity to follow part of its evolution with ground-based instrumentation. The availability of detailed observations made this case particularly appealing for the application and the validation of satellite-based tools (Pangaud et al, 2009;Claud et al, 2010;Laviola et al, 2011).…”
