SARS-CoV-2: The Monster Causes COVID-19

Abstract: Coronaviruses are viruses whose particles look like crowns. SARS-CoV-2 is the seventh member of the human coronavirus family to cause COVID-19 which is regarded as a once-in-a-century pandemic worldwide. It holds has the characteristics of a pandemic, which has broy -55ught many serious negative impacts to human beings. It may take time for humans to fight the pandemic. In addition to humans, SARS-CoV-2 also infects animals such as cats. This review introduces the origins, structures, pathogenic mechanisms, ch… Show more

“…COVID-19 is a worldwide pandemic, while there is currently no effective treatment for this disease (Song et al, 2022). Cancer patients, smokers, and obese individuals are considered to be more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and have a poor prognosis due to the high expression of ACE2 (Liang et al, 2020;Al Heialy et al, 2020;Patanavanich and Glantz, 2020;Zhang et al, 2021), a primary receptor of SARS-CoV-2 (van Liempt et al, 2006;Op den Brouw et al, 2008;Jia et al, 2020).…”

“…Since malignant tumors and related tumor treatments could seriously impair the immune function, patients with malignancies are especially susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection (Liang et al, 2020). In addition, hyperinflammation and a subsequent "cytokine storm," which is characterized by the increased expression levels of different proinflammatory cytokines (e.g., TNF and IL-6), have been observed in severe COVID-19 cases (Song et al, 2022), which indicates that immune regulation plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 (Nicholls et al, 2003;Mahallawi et al, 2018).…”

“…In addition, patients with COVID-19 may begin excreting or secreting the virus before symptoms appear, meaning that the emergence of asymptomatic infections poses a higher demand for pandemic control. [4] Once an individual is infected with COVID-19, the most common symptoms are fever, cough, myalgia, or fatigue, [5] which are similar to the symptoms of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) reported in 2003 and the Middle East respiratory syndrome reported in 2012. [6] Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, were also reported in patients with COVID-19.…”

“…[ 3 ] The SARS-CoV-2 is still evolving and mutating. Song C et al also reviewed the origins, pathogenic mechanisms, transmission characteristics, detection and diagnosis, evolution, and variation of SARS-CoV-2, [ 4 ] indicating that the risk of its potential rapid evolution should not be ignored. In addition, patients with COVID-19 may begin excreting or secreting the virus before symptoms appear, meaning that the emergence of asymptomatic infections poses a higher demand for pandemic control.…”
