Eucheuma cottonii waste seaweed has high cellulose content. Therefore, it could be potentially used as a raw material for biodegradable films to replace plastic. A plastic film is its moisture resistance, and this property allows plastic films to be used as packaging materials and biodegraded by microbes. This research aims to obtain a concentration of glycerol and Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC) to obtain the best biodegradable film characteristics from E. cottonii seaweed waste. This study was conducted in factorial by using a complete randomized block design with two factors: glycerol concentration and CMC concentration. Each treatment has three levels and three replications (3 × 3). The first factor was glycerol concentration: 0.25% (G1), 0.5% (G2), and 0.75% (G3). The second factor included concentrations of 1% CMC (C1), 2% CMC (C2), and 3% CMC (C3). Then, Tensile Strength (TS), thickness, solubility, and elongation were observed. Functional group analysis was conducted by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and biodegradability test. The results showed that the addition of glycerol concentrations of 0.5 and 0.7% and CMC from 1 to 3% produced tensile strengths of 23–39 MPa. These values are proportional to the tensile strength of Poly Tetra Fluoro ethyne (PTFE) and Poly Propylene (PP) synthetic plastics released by Dotmar Engineering Plastics. The biodegradability test showed that the produced biodegradable films decomposed after 14 days.

The study was to develop Streptococcus salivarius TUCC 1253-fermented soy oral strip that exhibits antimicrobial activity against oral pathogens. Indigenous S. salivarius TUCC 1253 isolated from healthy human saliva grew well in soy protein isolate after 24 hrs fermentation. Oral strip was developed using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose polymer, propylene glycol plasticizer, S. salivarius TUCC 1253-fermented soy, peppermint flavouring and distilled water. The formulation was successfully optimized which gives characteristics such as low moisture uptake, high percent elongation and high tensile strength. The formulation was successfully optimized with a percentage error of not greater than 4.22%. The optimized S. salivarius TUCC 1253-fermented soy oral strip (20% v/v inoculum) contains more than 108 CFU/g of live cells. The optimized S. salivarius TUCC 1253-fermented soy oral strip was able to inhibit all studied oral pathogens (Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus) in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Up to our knowledge, this is the first available oral strips containing indigenous oral probiotic-fermented soy which serve as a new alternative for oral health.

Plastic is very much indestructible even after a long period of time in the environment as it is mainly a derivative of strongly bonded long-chain petrochemical-based materials. Nowadays, plastic wastes have become an environmental hazard. However, a Starch based bio plastic can be a solution of this problem. Starch is a natural biopolymer having mainly two types of polymer glucose. In this research work, a biodegradable plastic is developed form potato starch. The advantages of starch-based plastic are its abundance and low cost. However, most of the starch-based materials exhibit very poor physico-mechanical properties like low tensile-tear strength, high stiffness, elongation at break and poor moisture stability. Improvement of starch-based bio-plastic properties is being attempted through starch modification, reinforcements (both organic and inorganic), processing conditions, and use of compatibilizers to develop substitutes for conventional plastics. The physic-mechanical properties of the biodegradable plastic have been ameliorated through some well designed processes. Several tests have been conducted on the biodegradable plastic as well as on the regular plastic in order to make a comparative study between them. Test results showed a very promising start for the biodegradable plastic for becoming the alternative of regular non-biodegradable plastics.
