Sargassum fusiforme Alginate Relieves Hyperglycemia and Modulates Intestinal Microbiota and Metabolites in Type 2 Diabetic Mice

Abstract: Sargassum fusiforme alginate (SF-Alg) possess many pharmacological activities, including hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic. However, the hypoglycemic mechanisms of SF-Alg remain unclear due to its low bioavailability. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic effect of SF-Alg on high-fat diet (HFD)/streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 2 diabetes (T2D) mice. SF-Alg intervention was found to significantly reduce fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC), while increasing high-densit… Show more

“…Studies have reported that Ruminiclostridium [ 5 ], belonging to Firmicutes, which can produce SCFAs by fermented carbohydrates, demonstrate an ability to supply energy for intestinal cells, and maintain the gut barrier integrity [ 26 ]. Enterorhabdus is a member of the family Coriobacteriaceae that occurs widely in the feces and intestines of mammals [ 27 ]. Catabacter is suggested to exert protective effects against liver function injury by producing cecal butyric acids [ 28 ].…”

“…The total carbohydrate content of ABP was determined by the phenol sulfuric acid method ( Liu et al, 2020 ). The uronic acid content was quantified via the m -hydroxydiphenyl method as previously described by Liu et al (2021b) using d -glucuronic acid as the standard. The protein content was measured using Bradford’s method ( Wu et al, 2019 ).…”

“…A significant increase in some benign intestinal bacteria ( Lactobacillus etc.) and a significant decrease in harmful bacteria ( Turicibacter and Helicobacter ) was found to diminish oxidative stress in mice ( Liu et al, 2021b ), which indicated the crucial function of gut microbiota in oxidative stress regulation. In addition, oxidized pork stimulated oxidative stress and inflammation by altering gut microbiota in mice ( Ge et al, 2020 ).…”
